Now retired from her tenured career in elementary school education, Ms. Stephens taught for the Texas Public School System for many wonderful years. Hired by the Gilmer Independent School District in 1972, she taught at Gilmer Elementary School for one year. Ms. Stephens was then hired by the Kountze Independent School District in 1973, where she remained until her retirement in 2011.

Finding great joy in her work as an educator, Ms. Stephens also lent her expertise as a workshop presenter for the Region V Service Center in Beaumont, Texas, from 1992 to 1994. Additionally, she lent her expertise as a University Interscholastic League coordinator and director for the Kountze Elementary School, and often tutors students in her retirement.

Civically, Ms. Stephens enjoyed being active in her community, especially with the Kountze Public Library. She has served on the library’s advisory board since 1992 and has been acting as secretary since 1997. Additionally, she formerly served as the chairman from 1994 to 1996.

Ms. Stephens studied at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, where she completed a Bachelor of Science in 1972. She later earned a master’s degree in Educational Supervision at Lamar University in Beaumont in 1989. She holds a dyslexia certification and is a certified Irlen Syndrome screener.

Aligning herself with several educational organizations to better support her teaching career, Ms. Stephens is a member of the Texas Classroom Teachers Association, with which she notably served as president from 1992 to 1994 and as the district five director from 1996 to 2000. She became the president again in 2000. Ms. Stephens is also a member and served as president of the Kountze Classroom Teachers Association before retiring in 2011, as well as a member and secretary of the Woman’s Club of Kountze, with which she previously held various prior roles. By invitation, Ms. Stephens was inducted into Delta Kappa Gamma Society International in 2000. She served as president, secretary and communications director for her chapter. Since retiring from the field, Ms. Stephens has become an active member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association and remains a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Stephens has been cited in the fifth edition of Who’s Who in American Education and the 20th and 25th editions of Who’s Who of American Women.
