Since 1975, he has found notable success as the president, director and plastic surgeon at the Hurwitz Center for Plastic Surgery and University of Pittsburgh Clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery. A native of Baltimore, Dr. Hurwitz earned both Bachelor of Arts and a Doctor of Medicine degrees from the University of Maryland in 1966 and 1970, respectively. In 1971, he started his first two years of General Surgery training at Yale New Haven Hospital, and then completed his final three at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. In 1977, he completed his two-year plastic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. After completing a fellowship in craniofacial surgery under Fernando Ortiz-Monasterio at the General Hospital of Mexico City, he returned to Pittsburgh as the first surgeon director of the University Craniofacial program. Eminently qualified in his field, Dr. Hurwitz was certified by both the State Board of Medicine in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the Medical Board of California and was then double boarded by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. He became a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the prestigious American Association of Plastic Surgeons.
Dr. Hurwitz began his career as University of Pittsburgh assistant professor of Plastic Surgery and chief of Plastic Surgery at Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh and attending surgeon Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He advanced professor of plastic surgery and the medical director of the Cleft Palate Craniofacial Center. In 1996, Dr. Hurwitz established the University of Pittsburgh’s Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Center.
Dr. Hurwitz has authored over 200 scientific papers and book chapters mostly published in the acclaimed Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Aesthetic Surgery Journal and Aesthetic Plastic Surgery journals. He has maintained his affiliations with such organizations as American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Aesthetic Society and the American Cleft Palate Association. Moreover, Dr. Hurwitz is past president of the Allegheny County Medical Society, the Greater Pittsburgh Plastic Surgery Society, the Ohio Valley Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Robert H. Ivy Pennsylvania Plastic Surgery Society.
For his contributions in the field, Dr. Hurwitz is honored to have been presented with the Walter Scott Brown Lectureship from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, the Top Doctor Award from Castle Connolly from 2001 to 2021, the Best Faculty Teaching Award from the Department of Plastic Surgery and the Best Attending scientific presentation at the 34th Annual Meeting of the Northeaster Society of Plastic Surgeons. Moreover, he has been selected guest speaker for dozens of international organizations, such as ISAPS, ICOPLAST, the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons, Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, The Hellenistic Society and the Russian Society of Plastic Surgeons. In accounting for his outstanding success, Dr. Hurwitz credits the unflagging support of his wife Linda and grown children.
