A talented writer, actor, singer, dancer and educator, Mr. Schneider has found success for more than 50 years, beginning in 1971 as a member of Theatre X in Milwaukee. From 1975 to 2004, he served as that company’s artistic leader. Over the years, he has become a professional playwright, authoring numerous plays. Since 1988, Mr. Schneider also performs as lead vocalist of the John Schneider Orchestra in Milwaukee.

Mr. Schneider has been active with teaching theatre and dance courses at Marquette University in Milwaukee since 2000. He has additionally excelled as an arts writer and editor for the Shepherd Express Newspaper in Milwaukee since 2006. Since 2020, Mr. Schneider has worked as a freelance writer for MKE Lifestyle Magazine.

In addition to his teaching and writing commitments, Mr. Schneider co-founded and produces the Milwaukee Fringe Festival. Established in 2016 and produced under the non-profit organization Nice Plays Inc., the festival showcases local artists from throughout the area, from actors and musicians to painters and playwrights, among others. As the co-founder, Mr. Schneider aims to expose those local artists while also attracting tourists to visit the community to enjoy the local artistic culture.

Mr. Schneider was drawn to a career in the arts by accident, having contracted polio at the age of three which resulted in the decision to rehabilitate from his paralysis by taking dance lessons. Improving his strength and agility as a result, he continued attending dance lessons until high school while also enrolling in piano and singing lessons and pursuing his interest in theater and playwriting.

After graduating from high school, Mr. Schneider continued his education at Saint Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts in theater in 1970. Supporting his Milwaukee community, he founded and directed the Project Non-Violence Youth Theatre Program from 2000 to 2013. For that civic duty, Mr. Schneider received an Outstanding Citizen Award for Contribution to Crime Prevention from the Exchange Club of Milwaukee.

Honored several times for his work, Mr. Schneider proudly accepted the first annual Award of Excellence in 1995 from the Milwaukee Arts Board for his contributions to the arts and culture of Milwaukee. He has also been presented with a National Endowment for the Arts Playwright Fellowship in 1988, a New Works Award from the Wisconsin Arts Board in 1990, an Unsung Urban Heroes Award from the Marquette Law School Restorative Justice Initiative, an Excellence in Part-Time Teaching Award from Marquette University and a Wisconsin Dance Council Award for dance writing and research in 2020. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Schneider has been cited in the 50th and 64th editions of Who’s Who in America, the third edition of Who’s Who in Entertainment, and the 24th and 25th editions of Who’s Who in the Midwest.
