PHILADELPHIA, PA, October 25, 2021 Senmer News Wire — Peter J. Wirs, CNE, has been included in Marquis Who’s Who, becoming the first such person to be included who is terminally ill with Mitochondrial Disease as well as the first to be an active athlete member of USA Wrestling. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Finding inspiration in his family tree which dates back to the Mayflower, Mr. Wirs has worked in public service throughout the course of his life, despite being terminally ill. Since 2007, he has found success as the Trustee of the Lincoln Charitable Trust to protect First Amendment rights of political association and promote government ethics, accountability and productivity, and since 2009, as the chairman of the Germantown Conservancy, to promote historical preservation, and, Mr. Wirs was recently designated as a U.S. District Judge Pro Tempore by reason of appointment as a receiver in an arbitration case of national importance. Mr. Wirs was twice elected Constable within the City of Harrisburg after winning both the Democratic and Republican nominations, being re-elected by write-in votes by both parties despite not seeking re-election. Mr. Wirs has also served as a Republican Ward Leader in Philadelphia, secretary of the Philadelphia City Republican Committee, and appointed multiple times by the Philadelphia City Commissioners as an Acting Minority Inspector of Elections.

Moreover, Mr. Wirs is the chairman of the Pennsylvania Wrestling Club since 2005 and despite suffering from Mitochondrial Disease, competes in Freestyle, Folkstyle, Greco-Roman and Beach Wrestling, twice holding a national championship in Beach Wrestling. Mr. Wirs is a member of the Historic Old St. George’s United Methodist Church (the world’s oldest Methodist church) and the U.S. Capitol Historical Society, among other civic organizations.

Mr. Wirs completed state-mandated law enforcement certification at Temple University and despite his age and terminal illness, is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Liberal Professional Studies. He is a certified nonprofit executive awarded upon successful examination by the National Association of Nonprofit Organizations & Executives.

He has been repeatedly honored by the U.S. House of Representatives, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, and governors of Iowa and Pennsylvania, among other public officials, for competing in amateur wrestling despite suffering from Mitochondrial Disease. Notably, his willingness to wrestle while terminally ill was recognized in 2016 by Pope Francis. Among his career highlights, Mr. Wirs authored the 250-page arbitration award in a dispute between the Democratic and Republican National Committees and is currently writing a treatise, Government Ethics, Accountability and Productivity as part of his study at the University of Pennsylvania.
