Mr. Fox is a retired chief process engineer who spent more than 60 years representing several exemplary organizations. Concluding his engineering career in 2005 as a consultant for Nexant, a subsidiary of Bechtel Inc., he served in this capacity for over a decade, beginning in 1992. That role came on the heels of his tenured position at Bechtel Inc. in San Francisco, where he worked as a process design manager in the Refining and Chemical Division of the organization for 25 years. Established in San Francisco, Bechtel is notably an engineering, procurement, construction and project management company now headquartered in Reston, Virginia. Additionally, Mr. Fox enjoyed 20 years in process development with the M.W. Kellogg Company at its Jersey City and Piscataway, New Jersey, laboratories from 1947 to 1966 and another two years as a refinery engineer with American Oil in Texas City, Texas, where he produced aviation gasoline for World War II between 1943 and 1945.
Since closing the engineering chapter of his career, Mr. Fox became an art docent at the Oakland Museum of California, where he served for two decades. Retiring in 2014, he began serving as an associate docent. Mr. Fox also began administering the Fox Y-DNA Surname Project for FamilytreeDNA in 2004, where he currently provides assistance to members of various Fox families seeking ancestral connections. He has authored two books on family history incorporating genetic testing results: Growing with America – The Fox Family of Philadelphia and Growing with America – Colonial Roots, plus one historical biography book: Mary Hite’s Story. He also coauthored a technical review of Fox Surname Project findings entitled Y-DNA Testing of a Paper Trail.
An expert in refinery and chemical plant design, processing of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the production of synthetic fuels, Mr. Fox obtained three patents in the field of chemical reactor design. As a researcher, he has contributed over 20 scholarly articles to various professional journals in the areas of liquid hydrocarbon upgrading, production of transportable natural gas and production of synthetic fuels. Apart from his patents and professional writing contributions, Mr. Fox led the process design of multiple noteworthy projects, including the 1982 New Zealand Gas to Gasoline Project, which contributed to his expertise in synthetic fuels. Other significant engineering projects to his credit have included the1955 pilot plant demonstration of a gas reformer catalyst for SASOL in South Africa, the design of hydrotreaters for the Syncrude tar sands refining project in Alberta, Canada, in 1975 and numerous LNG projects, starting in 1977 with the world-class Badak LNG project in Bontang, Indonesia.
Mr. Fox is an alumnus of Princeton University, class of 1944, where he earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering in September, 1943 and June, 1947, respectively. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at the end of his junior year, in June of 1943 and was elected to the Honorary Engineering Society Tau Beta Pi in 1952. In 1994, Mr. Fox completed art docent training through the Oakland Museum of California and graduated from a writing course at University of California at Berkeley a few years later.
To remain aware of developments in the field, Mr. Fox’s has maintained involvement with several significant professional memberships, including as fellow member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) where he served on its board of directors from 1976 to 1978 and, earlier, as the chairperson of the North Jersey and the Northern California sections. He also became a licensed professional chemical engineer in the state of California at this time. He is an emeritus member of the American Chemical Society and has been a committee member of the American Petroleum Institute. Well regarded for his accomplishments, Mr. Fox received a Quaker Oats fellowship to attend Princeton University in 1945. Highlighting his accomplishments in the field, he was honored with a Professional Progress Award from the Norcal Section of AIChE in 1995.
