Since 2019, she has excelled as the founder, president, and chief executive officer of the International Foundation for Women’s Empowerment (IFWE), a nonprofit organization whose objective is to empower women on the personal and professional levels, regardless of nationality, religion, and political affiliation.
Ms. Salem was proudly cited as a Woman Leader in the sectors of academia, education, and social development by the University of Maryland Kahlil Gibran Chair for Values and Peace in 2019. She additionally accrued different awards; among them are: a Trailblazer Award from Lebanese Club of Michigan in 2014 and an Appreciation Award from the George Washington University Master of Science in Finance Program in 2008. She has been notably affiliated with the Faculty of Languages and Translation at Saint Joseph University (FdLT, USJ) where she is also a member of their Advisory Board, the International Society of Technology and Education (ISTE), TESOL International Association: Advancing Excellence in English Language Teaching, the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education (SITE), the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE), and the Association for Talent Development, DC Chapter. Ms. Salem has created the framework for a forthcoming honor society, mainly in the Middle East, known as the International Society for Educational Excellence (ISEE) that would have three objectives: fighting corruption through ethics, fighting bad leadership that seeks to be served by instilling servant leadership, and fighting poverty.
Ms. Salem initially pursued an education at the Saint Joseph University of Beirut, from which she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in languages in 1986 and a master’s degree in translation in 1987 (Attestation de Maîtrise). She later continued her education at the American University of Beirut with a Teaching Diploma (1999) and a Master of Education in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (2006). Additionally, she completed coursework in leadership from 2018 to 2019 at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Executive Education, at the end of which she received an Executive Certificate in Public Leadership. Ms. Salem has completed almost all coursework toward an Education Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction at the George Washington University Graduate School of Education.
Ms. Salem began her career as a translator in 1986. In addition, she taught English as a foreign language at the Collège Notre-Dame de Jamhour from 1992 to 1999. She was further recruited as an adjunct professor of English for specific purposes in the department of English at Saint Joseph University of Beirut from 1992 to 2006, and an English teacher and yearbook adviser with the American Community School at Beirut from 2000 to 2006. She initiated mentorship programs, conducted trainings on emotional intelligence in education, team building, ethics, leadership skills, webpage design, and online assessment to merge technology in education.
In the 1990s, Ms. Salem recognized the early potential of digital and remote education and created Nada’s ESL Island, an interactive digital resource platform for English language learners and teachers. The platform amassed many awards and more than 1.5 million users in the early 2000s, and acted as a blueprint for teachers on effective digital education strategies for the twenty-first century.
After immigrating to the United States, Ms. Salem served as the administrative director for the Master of Science in Finance Program at the George Washington University School of Business (GWSB) from 2006 to 2008. With GWSB from 2008 to 2014, Ms. Salem found much success as the Assessment of Learning (AoL) coordinator for the Master of Science in Finance Program’s Accreditation with the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). During this time, she was also appointed as a senior research associate and web content editor with the National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition. Ms. Salem was also the co-creator and co-instructor of the online graduate methods course for teachers of foreign languages at the George Washington University Graduate School of Education. In addition, she was the co-editor in chief of “Teaching World Languages: A Practical Guide- Arabic Edition” with The National Capital Language Resource Center in Washington, DC. From 2011 to 2019, Ms. Salem served as Executive Director of Project Roots, an organization dedicated to enabling Lebanese Americans to reconnect with their origins in Lebanon, where she led national citizenship registration campaigns and created a hands-on international educational academy focused on educating young people about their roots.
In January 2022, she will be named a Top Executive in Education and Leadership by Marquis Who’s Who.
