Mr. Coffee had found much success throughout a fulfilling career in legal service that spanned more than 40 years. Now retired from his profession, he excelled as a senior member at Melvin Coffee & Associates PC between 1978 and 2000. Specializing in taxation law, he previously served as a partner at Kelly, Inman, Flynn & Coffee PC from 1963 to 1978. Mr. Coffee initially began his career after graduating from college, whereupon he accepted a position with Drexler, Wald, Sobol & Coffee PC in 1959.
Before embarking upon his professional path, Mr. Coffee pursued a formal education at the University of Denver. Though he initially struggled in his legal studies, he applied himself diligently and obtained a Bachelor of Science in law in 1957, after which he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws. He fulfilled his military commitment commencing in 1959 by serving in the U.S. Army. Mr. Coffee next attended New York University from which he earned a Master of Laws in 1959. He was subsequently admitted to practice law before the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado in 1958, the U.S. Tax Court, U.S. Claims Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit in 1959, and the Supreme Court of the United States in 1970.
Long dedicated to civic advocacy, Mr. Coffee was active as the principal draftsman of the Colorado Income Tax Act of 1964, and was elected as a member of the Colorado House of Representatives from 1967 until 1969. Among other career-related endeavors to his credit, he was appointed to the Southwest Bar as the chairman of its IRS liaison committee in 1989. Recruited by the University of Denver as an adjunct professor of tax law from 1974 to 1983, Mr. Coffee has also distinguished himself as an author, having authored numerous works in his area of expertise, such as “Protecting Client in Tax Fraud Investigation” and “New Directions in Guarding Client Records.”
Mr. Coffee has been affiliated with several relevant organizations, many of which he has held positions of high authority. Among them, he participated as the vice president of the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy and the president of the Colorado State Board of Accountancy. He was chosen to these positions by certified public accountants but he was neither trained nor practiced as an accountant.
Mr. Coffee served as the chairman of the taxation section and continuing legal education committee for the Colorado Bar Association. Mr. Coffee also was active in the Denver and Tri-County Respiratory Disease Association in 1962.
