Mr. Paul excelled throughout an exciting career as a professional geologist for more than 35 years. Retiring from Western Oil Sands Inc., which Mr. Paul co-founded in 2000, he notably served as the chief mine geologist at one of its two primary facilities, the Muskeg River Mine, 2000 – 2007. In this capacity, Mr. Paul was responsible for directing operations, ensuring that miners were following the ore, calculating the ore reserves for the mine and core drilling to establish future mining resources.
Beginning his career as a mine geologist for Northgate Fluorspar Mine in Walden, Colorado, from 1969 to 1972, Mr. Paul later worked for such organizations as Sunnyside Gold Mine in Silverton, Colorado and Carr Fork Copper Mine in Tooele, Utah. In 1981, he was appointed as the chief mine geologist for Ajax Mine in Cripple Creek, Colorado before operating for another seven years as a consultant in the Cripple Creek Gold District from 1983 to 1990. Although he intended to remain a consultant, Mr. Paul returned to a career that involved fieldwork due to the recession.
Hired by Magma Copper Company, subsequently acquired by BHP Inc., Mr. Paul thrived for nearly a decade as the chief mine geologist for the Magma Copper Mine in Superior, Arizona and the geology team leader for the Muskeg River Mine feasibility study. He was later recruited as co-founder of Western Oil Sands for the development of the Muskeg River oil sand mine project in Alberta, Canada between 1999 and 2007.
Mr. Paul has published several peer-reviewed articles in prominent geology journals as a researcher in his field. Additionally, Mr. Paul was co-discoverer of the Magma Resolution Porphyry copper deposit in Superior, Arizona.
Mr. Paul is active on the Geology Department enhancement committee at the Colorado School of Mines. He is president of a local shooting club. Mr. Paul is also formerly a member of the board of directors and has volunteered his time for a local non-profit charity organization called Help the Needy, which provides emergency funds throughout the county during emergency situations.
Mr. Paul pursued an education at the Colorado School of Mines, from which he earned an undergraduate degree in geology in 1969. Shortly thereafter, he obtained a Master of Science in geology on campus in 1975.
Mr. Paul is a member of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration Engineers, and the Florissant Scientific Society. He is a member of the Adirondack Mountain Club and the Colorado Mountain Club, where, after completing their Basic Mountaineering School, he taught the compass and wilderness navigation module. Mr. Paul also supported the Boy Scouts of America as a scoutmaster for troop 25 in Woodland Park from 1985 to 1989.
