Prior to embarking on his professional path, he pursued an education at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, where he obtained a Doctor of Medicine in 1975. He completed his residency in general pediatrics at the Danderyd’s University Hospital of Karolinska Institute between 1977 and 1981 as well as a 2 ½ fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at the University of California Los Angeles Medical Center and the David Geffen School of Medicine soon thereafter. Dr. Dahlstrom subsequently continued his academic efforts at the University of California Los Angeles, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in nutrition in 1988, which was also accepted and defended at the Karolinska Institute Medical School in 1988.
Since 1977, Dr. Dahlstrom has been licensed to practice medicine in Sweden. As of 1993, he has been likewise board certificated in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition in the state of California. He initially built a prolific career serving at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden as an assistant professor of pediatrics from 1983 to 1985, an assistant professor in general pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition from 1986 to 1988, a clinical and research assistant professor from 1988 to 1990 and received a docentur in pediatrics in 1990. Subsequently, he excelled as a clinical associate professor at Stanford University from 1992 to 1993, a clinical and research associate professor at Huddinge University Hospital in affiliation with the Karolinska Institute from 1990 to 1996. During that time he was also associate dean for the course in pediatrics at Huddinge University Hospital at Karolinska Medical School from 1992 to 1996. After coming back to California in 1996 he has been serving as an adjunct clinical associate professor with Stanford Children’s Health at Stanford University. In his present capacity, Dr. Dahlstrom is responsible for his specialty clinics, his surgeries (endoscopies) and clinical research and some education in his specialty of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at PCHA/Stanford Children’s Health in California.
In his career related endeavors, Dr. Dahlstrom has authored over 100 abstracts and 40 peer-reviewed scientific articles, and has presented his research at over 100 speaking engagements and conferences. A former board member for the Swedish Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, he has been additionally active with several medicine-related organizations, including the Swedish Medical Society, the European and North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, the American Gastroenterology Association and the American Medical Association, among others. Dr. Dahlstrom attributes much of his success to his dedication as a clinician and to his ongoing medical clinical research.
Esteemed for his contributions to the field, Dr. Dahlstrom has received multiple accolades, including the Leading Physicians of the World Award, the Montage Foundation Scholarship Award and the inclusion with the Kingston’s National Registry of Who’s Who. Among his professional accomplishments, he is proud of graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in nutrition at UCLA, California and at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden and serving as one of the few Swedish doctors working clinically combined with research in the United States.
